On Tuesday, 25th of September class IIIE was invited to America Corner in Katowice. We listened to a lecture by Peter Sokolowski who's an American lexicographer and works with the Merriam-Webster dictionary. He explained to us step by step how dictionaries are made, what's important when creating a good definition and which sources are used to find new words. We also learned about a fascinating dependency between current news and most searched words on the dictionary's website.
For example after a big tragedy such as 9/11 the most viewed words were "surreal" and "terrorism". He also told us about some commonly misspelled or hard to write words such as "ubiquitous". At the end of the lecture while asking questions we've learned that Mr. Sokolowski has Polish roots and came to Poland to try and find them. Overall, it was an interesting and educational experience and we are looking forward to the next meeting in Katowice.
